The Benefits of New Siding

This photo shows our team removing old siding off a home in Rochester Hills
The exterior of your home is extremely important. Not only is it one of the first things people notice about your home, it is also one of the first lines of defense against each of the 4 seasons we experience. Aging siding not only becomes an eyesore, but it begins to allow the elements to slowly make their way into the depths of your home. The good news is that replacing your siding allows you to increase curb appeal, increase energy efficiency, and repair any hidden structural damage.
Increase Curb Appeal
Aging siding often becomes an eyesore that effects the curb appeal, value, and efficiency of your home.
As siding ages, it also often fades to a less vibrant color than it originally was, and begins to retain a generally dirty appearance that is very difficult to keep clean. This doesn’t necessarily indicate that it was neglected, but is something that naturally happens to all homes. New siding comes in a variety of colors, profiles, and textures. This means that when replacing your siding, it is a great time to change the color and add some architectural details to your home! Often we use this time to wrap the exterior of wooden windows with aluminum cladding to help prevent the need for future painting and add some extra detail to the look of your windows.
Repair Hidden Structural Damage

Seen here is a photo of after the new siding was installed.
Aging siding allowed water to leak around a window, causing structural damage.
Aging siding can often allow rainwater to leak around windows of your home, potentially causing structural damage to your home. Sometimes the signs of this damage become easily noticeable, possibly even seeing actual water along the sill (bottom) of the window. Unfortunately, sometimes the structural damage isn’t so obvious, instead it may slowly show up as a crack in the drywall or almost unnoticeable without removing the siding or drywall to find the damage. Structural damage can range from delaminating plywood, deteriorated studs or floor framing. When replacing your siding, often we can repair any structural damage from the outside without disturbing the interior of your home. Repairing the structural damage early will help ensure you don’t encounter more costly repairs later. Many times when repairing these issues with siding, they aren’t horribly expensive, though it is important to note that it’s often not noticeable before removing the siding, so it can be an added cost.
Increase Energy Efficiency
Adding house wrap can help keep winter winds and spring rains out of your home.
Some upgrades to consider when replacing the siding on your home include adding insulation to your exterior walls (and ceiling if desired!). Sometimes homes that were built when insulation was expensive and fuel was cheap lack any wall insulation at all. When the exterior siding is removed it becomes an excellent time to consider adding insulation to the wall cavities with blown in insulation. For homes that already have insulation but would like to add more, adding rigid foam insulation can help you add up to an R-10 insulating value. (R values indicate the level of efficiency the insulation adds, the higher the value the better!).
Another addition to consider to your siding project could be to use a moisture and wind barrier commonly known as house wrap. House wrap helps in multiple ways, mostly helping to keep the wind and moisture out while still allowing your home to breathe. This option also is known to help prevent drafts in your home.
